Gate Valves
Why Gate Valves?
These valves open to a nearly full port size, even at larger diameters. Can close even with viscous fluids, which can stop other valve designs such as ball or some butterfly valves. The gate on these valves closes in a knife-like motion, cutting into the stream. These valves can also provide flow in either direction, but uni-direction valves can be provided which offer superior sealing at higher pressures from one direction only.
Advantages of Gate Valves
- Very low pressure loss
- Available in large diameters
- Usable with viscous fluids due to the cutting action of the gate
Disadvantages of Gate Valves
- Typically closes very slowly, even with an actuator model
- Requires a large installation space, especially outward from the pipeline (the gate goes outward from the body toward the handle)
- Maintenance may be difficult depending on the size and location of the valve
Materials of Gate Valves Available
- Carbon Steel
- Cast Stainless Steel
- Forged Steel
